Vacancy: Researcher – Justice and Violence Prevention | Institute for Security Studies

 The ISS is seeking a Researcher to join its Justice and Violence Prevention programme. As part of its efforts to address systemic issues in South Africa’s justice sector. This vacancy is based in the greater Cape Town area. This is a remote, full-time position offering an opportunity to work with a team of experts dedicated to promoting justice and reducing violence across the country.

The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) is a leading African organisation working to enhance human security through research, policy advice, and capacity building. The ISS contributes to a peaceful and prosperous Africa by providing authoritative analysis and recommendations on critical issues such as criminal justice, violence prevention, corruption, and governance.

Position: Researcher – Justice and Violence Prevention
Location: Work-from-home, Cape Town area
Contract: Until December 2026 (with the possibility of renewal)
Citizenship: Open to South African citizens or candidates with valid South African work permits
Salary: Competitive

Key Responsibilities:

• Coordinate and oversee the implementation and evaluation of multiple projects.

• Initiate, plan and conduct both primary and secondary research.

• Maintain proactive relationships with key partners, including relevant regional and international organisations.

• Assist in administrative and logistical tasks for the programme, including:

  • Event coordination

  • Budget tracking

  • Scheduling meetings

  • Supporting internal processes

• Contribute to the implementation of effective monitoring and evaluation (M&E) plans.

Requirements:

• Minimum of a Master’s degree in a relevant field.

• Additional qualifications in project management are desirable.

• At least five years of relevant professional experience in policy, research, government, or a related field.

• Demonstrated track record in researching topics related to criminal justice, corruption, or similar areas.

• Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills; ability to collaborate across government and civil society sectors.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

• Solid project coordination skills, including experience managing complex projects or events.

• Proficiency with social media and communication platforms.

• Strong planning and M&E abilities, with a good understanding of results-based management and reporting.

• Capacity to work independently, handle pressure, and meet deadlines.

• Willingness to travel within Cape Town and South Africa as needed.
